THEIR PURPOSE.
In 2004, Kyle Parsons was confronted by the planet's growing pollution problem in the beautiful beaches of Bali, Indonesia. On the very sand and water he loved most, the extreme combinations of waste beneath the grains and between the breaks devastated him. Adding to his concern, Kyle discovered a secondary epidemic in the heart of his second home; tire pollution.
“Each year billions of tires are thrown into landfills or are polluting our lands, and they do not decompose. These tires are breeding grounds for mosquitos which spread nasty diseases like: Malaria, Dengue, Zika and more. The waste tires are also being burned for cheap fuel which is very toxic for the earth and our health,” The Indosole Journey (indosole.com).
Kyle found purpose and took action, launching Indosole with a dedicated team in 2009. Their business handcrafts quality footwear using recycled motorbike tires as the sole and soul of each shoe. Indosole developed an organic process to do this all while keeping its supply chain local and carbon footprint low. Let’s learn more about their process…
THEIR PROCESS.
It took several years for Indosole to find its footing, working with the near-indestructibility of tires. However, by collaborating with local artisans and retail partners, Kyle’s team was able to home down the right techniques and technologies. Using their Sole Engineered Tire Technology (SETT), Indosole transformed each recycled tire into a refined powder to be used for the sole.
A new pair of Indosole shoes consisted of 40% recycled tire, 30% natural rubber, and 30% new material like ENVRO Fiber. Each shoe is carefully designed to tackle all terrain, wet or dry, all while providing support, cushioning, and comfort for each wearer.
As we approach the 15th anniversary of their launch, let’s learn more about their progress…
THEIR PROGRESS.
Since their founding, Indosole has handcrafted thousands of shoes each year, now distributing to 30+ countries worldwide. Meeting the highest standards of social and environmental impact, the company has become a certified B Corporation and is a proud member of 1% for the Planet. Kyle and his team are continuing to find more-streamlined processes to tackle the environmental crisis.
The purpose, process, and progress of Indosole have been admired by SEED People’s Market, as well as many young environmentalists and sustainably-motivated entrepreneurs.
